ORTHOPANTOMOGRAM (OPG) & LATERAL CEPHALOMETRY |

An OPG machine uses a rotating arm to create an x-ray panorama of the teeth, mandible and maxilla. This is often performed in conjunction with a lateral cephalogram to obtain a profile view. Bone age assessment of the hands can also be performed at all sites.

Images are formed by radiologists and sonographers placing an ultrasound probe and gel on the body surface. The differential absorption characteristics of body tissues to high frequency waveforms allows creation of pictures of the body and disease processes in real time, without ionising radiation. Ultrasound can also be used to guide needle position in real-time. Services include:

Bringing tomography to the 21st Century, Tomosynthesis is an exciting new modality generating multiple x-ray slices from a single acquisition. It provides lower radiation dose than CT, with superior spatial resolution. Unlike CT, images can be performed with the patient standing. Its main role is in musculoskeletal imaging as well as assisting with abdominal radiology.

A highly specialised Digital Breast Imaging centre has been set up at Maroondah Hospital focusing on assessment and follow-up of breast disease. The dedicated, experienced and empathic staff assist with stereotactic biopsy and vacuum-assisted biopsy/ mammotome biopsy in addition to the diagnositic mammography. We are one of the few centres that do not require the patient to stand during a mammographic biopsy (prone table).
Our newly installed digital system utilises the new diagnositic advances of Tomosynthesis- we are the first site to be able to offer this in the state, and only the second in the country (click here for more information)

Multi-slice CT (including 64 slice) uses powerful computer processing to reconstruct spirally-acquired xray information into multi-planar or 3D volume pictures. Oral and intravenous contrast improves both sensitivity and specificity of the study in many cases. CT is a mainstay of many medical specialties, and includes:
